Differences between IELTS and TOEFL

Nowadays, there are several different systems for the official accreditation of the level of English. On the one hand we have the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), a type of exam created by the University of Cambridge, the British Council and the IDP of Australia. This certificate is taken in person and the speaking part is done in front of an examiner. In Spain there is only the British Council as an accredited entity to carry out these exams. The most characteristic feature is that you do not pass or fail, but you are given a score that determines your level of English. There are two types of test within the IELTS: the academic version and the general training. However, there is a second evaluation system which is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This certificate is even older than the IETLS and is taken online, accrediting from level A1 to C2.

Finally, there are the Cambridge English Language Assessment certificates, the most typical and well known in Spain. In this case, the exam can be passed or failed but its validity is permanent, that is, it does not expire. There are different exams depending on the level: KET, PET, First, Advanced and Proficiency (from A2 to C2) and they differ from the above mentioned by having a specific grammar.
