{"id":3795,"date":"2022-12-12T16:42:12","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T16:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funtalk.es\/how-to-be-educated-in-english\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T08:06:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:06:17","slug":"how-to-be-educated-in-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funtalk.es\/en\/how-to-be-educated-in-english\/","title":{"rendered":"How to be educated in English?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being polite when communicating in English is important and often when we talk about education or lack thereof,<strong> we are referring to what is considered normal in a society rather than the character of individuals<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis becomes much more relevant and meaningful when the inhabitants of entire regions or nations are described as &#8220;educated&#8221; or &#8220;ill-mannered&#8221;.<strong> It is not uncommon that by the expressions used a person can be labeled<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWant to be polite in English?<br \/>\n<strong>Read on and Funtalk will let you in on all the secrets<\/strong>.     <\/p>\n<h2>How to be educated in English?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/funtalk.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/personas-felices-hablando-divirtiendose.jpg\" alt=\"happy people talking having fun\" width=\"685\" height=\"457\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 685px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 685\/457;\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  \" src=\"https:\/\/funtalk.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/personas-felices-hablando-divirtiendose.jpg\" alt=\"happy people talking having fun\" width=\"685\" height=\"457\"><\/noscript>  Our goal is not how to teach you to be polite, since clearly every atom of your body gives off education.<br \/>\n<strong>The purpose we intend to accomplish is that you avoid cross-cultural misunderstandings<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHaving clarified this, let&#8217;s move on.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s start with how we can ask for something politely: <em>Can I have a burger, please<\/em> We could also say: <em>A burger, please<\/em> As you have probably deduced since you are a very intelligent person, <strong>the word &#8220;please&#8221; is very important.<\/strong> It is even more relevant if you omit the &#8220;Can I have&#8221;.<br \/>\nTo make it clearer, imagine walking up to a hamburger counter and saying: &#8220;A hamburger&#8221; A bit harsh, isn&#8217;t it?<br \/>\nOn the other hand, something you should know is when you ask for something outside of a person&#8217;s duties, such as asking for change for a vending machine.<br \/>\nCould&#8221; is often used instead of &#8220;Can&#8221; as it shows more formality: <em>Could you give me change, please?<\/em> The &#8220;Could&#8221; is the past tense of &#8220;Can&#8221;, as you may already know (and if you didn&#8217;t, now you do).<br \/>\nThis is used to talk about the hypothetical and is considered more polite.         <\/p>\n<h2>Ways to say thank you in English<\/h2>\n<p>  Saying thank you in English <strong>is perhaps the best known expression in the language<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe can probably also classify it as one of the most important.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s see more about it:    <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Thank you<\/em>: This is the classic form we all know<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Thanks<\/em>: This is a more colloquial version of saying it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Cheers<\/em>: It is considered a more British way of saying it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ta<\/em>: Perhaps this is the one that may be the most unfamiliar.<br \/>\nIt is a colloquial form that certain British people of a certain age have. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Other phrases to be polite<\/h2>\n<p>  In case what we have already explained is not enough, we give you some more phrases to help you to be polite in English.<br \/>\nHere they are:   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Can I help you?<\/em> <\/li>\n<li><em>Do you need anything else?
